An efficient kitchen lighting design plan will make your kitchen shine!

Is your kitchen dark and dingy? Maybe what you need is a better lighting layout and plan to avoid spoiling too many more cakes!

Lighting work surfaces properly is essential when working in kitchens. There are many tasks being performed in kitchens other than eating and cooking; entertaining, watching TV, doing homework and office work on the computer. Elements of lighting designs to be considered when designing a layout: Layer the lighting in kitchens for maximum efficiency. Layer 1: Use general or ambient lighting for overall soft illumination of general traffic flow. Layer 2: Under cabinet lighting for task lighting over work surfaces to eliminate shadows as you work. 3.Decorative or accent lighting for illumination over eating surfaces or to highlight artwork. 4. Built in lighting such as cove lighting for softer illumination.

Lighting fixtures and light sources come in a vast variety of styles and designs to suit any lighting layout: surface mounted (track, chandelier and pendant, ceiling, wall mounted) and recessed fixtures for low ceilings or to give a sleek look. Light sources include incandescent, halogen, led and xenon. For maximum energy efficiency and longest life (10 times longer than incandescent)use fluorescents whenever appropriate. Incandescents are not as energy efficient (4 to 5 times less) but renders color effectively so use for mostly accent lighting. Halogen, low voltage and xenon are other options; consult an online lighting designer for best usage of these particular light sources.
