May 27, 2006 By: Karen Hofatt B.I.D What is Cottage decorating? Cottage style tips for urban living.Cottage living is one of the casual decorating styles with an informal, relaxed, calm ambiance. Beach and English cottage styles come to mind. These type of cottage homes incorporate furniture with aged and weathered finishes for a well worn and lived in look. White or light painted furniture with linen fabric will give a beachier feel. Color palettes should be light - whites and pastels will create airy freshness. Hang a found chandelier faux finished crackled white over your a rugged wood dining table. Old church benches completes the dining room setting. Slipcover old furnishings for a loose, casual appearance to the interior decor. A cheerful braided or hooked rug will anchor the furniture. For a more English cottage theme, use brighter patterned florals and plaids in fabrics for furniture, drapery and throw pillows. Cover windows with sheer fabric for a light and breezy feeling. This interior design style is not complete without baskets, dried and fresh flowers in tin vases or ceramic pitchers. Whitewashed gilded picture frames with antique family photos are charming home decor additions. As you can see, creating a cottage home does not require a great deal of interior design expertise or funds.
