June 03, 2006 By: Karen Hofatt B.I.D Use these inspirational interior decorating ideas and interior design tips to choose a color scheme for room designs. One source for home decorating ideas is to get color cues from furnishings and accessories. Artwork, a patterned throw pillow or even an area carpet can set the tone for the home decor; a patterned oriental carpet has many colors intertwined. Is there a color you especially like? If so, choose one and use it as the basis of a color scheme in your designs. Nature and food are other resources; add blue skies to help calm a baby's room or you may want the look of lemons in your Caribbean sunroom. However, if you like one color in particular, then use a color wheel, available at most art stores. First ask what do you want the room decor to feel like and what kind of mood do you want to create for your room designs, will it be, relaxing and calm or energetic and lively? The color wheel has three different schemes. Complementary (2 colors opposite each other) and split complementary (3 colors forming a triangular base), Analogous (colors beside each other), Monochromatic (uses one color but varies the intensity by adding white or black). Choose the latter two for a relaxing and tranquil room decor and use higher contrast complementary schemes to create more lively interiors. Some other design tips for creating calm interiors: use cooler colors such as blues, purples and greens as they have a more psychologically soothing effect. Warm colors can have the same effect on the decor but use them in a monocromatic scheme. These decorating tips will help you start solving the mysteries of choosing color for room designs and so create home interiors with impact.
