Patterns are a lively source of decoration for the interior decor - ideas to mix and match prints in home decorating without creating a mess.

Are you fond of fabric patterns but don't know how to mix and match them effectively in interiors? They can be a complicated form of home decoration but you can create a harmonious interior design scheme without creating a mess. A few simple rules and decorating ideas will help unravel the mysteries of using prints in home interiors.

1. Choose a theme or interior design style for the room decor first. Traditional country style interiors may have florals and a modern decorating style; geometric circular or angular motifs.
2. Use a fabric swatch board in your room decorating. Determine the proportion of patterns to be used by laying the fabrics out in the approximate proportions that you are going to use in the design. These ideas will assist you in visualizing how the prints will look on furnishings. Cut a large piece for the larger item such as the sofa and a smaller piece for a smaller item such as the cushion. Large scale prints will generally look better on large furniture and small prints on smaller scale furniture. Mix large and small scale patterns for better balance in the room interior design. Balance prints by repeating motifs in a side chair if you use them on sofa cushions.
3. Many textile suppliers often have fabrics that complement each other and this will lessen your research for suitable fabric 'partners'.
4. Use large expanses of wall color to balance more energetic fabric patterns repeated throughout rooms. Start with a color you like then choose fabrics with similar colors.
5. If you are using fabric prints from different suppliers, use a common color to tie the interior decor together.

In home decoration, use theme, color and scale for successful mixing and matching of patterns. These ideas will help you choose patterns for room interiors with more confidence. Patterns are like accent colors, they are a lively source of decoration and by using them in smaller quantities throughout home interiors, you can create mini-focal points to enliven the room decor.
