July 23, 2006 By: KarenHofatt B.I.D Know the basic types of fireplace design - make an informed decision as to which fireplace designs will best suit your interior decor.Today, the fireplace is used for mostly decorative purposes and not a primary source of heat for heating your home. Here are some pros and cons to decorating with the different types: 1. Gas fireplaces burn natural gas or propane. Generally clean burning, man-made logs look like the real thing. Direct venting outside is required via a chimney or vent. Will work in a power outage. Remote control options are available to turn the fire on. 2. An electric fireplace is great for small spaces such as apartments and where no outside venting is required. Very cost effective. Fire and flames are very realistic. Mostly decorative but some generate heat. Just plug in! 3. Wood burning fireplaces are great in the country or where an power outages may occur. Wood is burned so a stash of firewood is needed for a constant fire. A chimney is required to vent the smoke outside and periodic removal of ashes required. Primarily decorative. 4. Pellet burning designs have increased in popularity. Uses sawdust pellets that come in bags and runs on electricity. Easier to obtain in places where there are a lack of trees. Requires venting outside via a chimney. Fireplaces are a wonderful addition to any interior decor. Choose the fireplace that suits your home decor and decorating needs best and you will enjoy its warmth on cold, dreary nights.
